Changes — Organic Coffee

The same conditions that have made Central America home to some of the world’s finest organic coffees also make it susceptible to the effects of climate change. Its moderate temperatures are already rising, its predictable rainy season is becoming irregular, and pests and fungi could invade altitudes where they previously couldn’t live. Although seemingly minor, small increases in temperature and slight changes in rainfall are predicted to have major consequences in coffee growing areas. While the conditions might make high-quality coffees more abundant and cheaper for a few years, the price will eventually rise as availability sinks in the long term, researchers said.

As a result of climate change, Central America farmers might have to move their crops to higher elevations, where less land is less available.

“Farmers are going to have to try to squeeze onto that land,” said Rafael A. Diaz, a Costa Rican economist who is part of a four-country research project aimed at documenting the effects of climate change on small coffee farmers.

The changes could be devastating for farmers, who will eventually be forced to replace their coffee trees with another crop to survive. Coffee, the world’s second-largest traded commodity behind petroleum, supports around 25 million growers and 100 million people around the globe once family members are added.

Minimalism in Interior Design

The term minimalism is used to refer to any instance where a thing is stripped down to its barest essentials. In the post-WWII Western world, minimalism became famous throughout the visual and performing arts. Musicians, writers, artists, and visual designers began to express their creativity in the simplest manners. In doing so, these artists were able to display their inspirations and interpretations in more meaningful ways; they were drawing attention to the most important and basic features of their creations, rather than cluttering their chosen canvas with non-essential expressions.

This post-modern approach to art that was so new to the Western world, however, was the traditional modus operandi of the East, especially in Japan. The Japanese are well-known for seeking simplicity and pursuing perfection in their arts, architecture, design, and ways of life. In essence, the Japanese were the original creative minimalists. So although minimalism is a more nascent concept of expression in the Western world, Asians have been keen to minimalism for millennia.

Minimalism in interior design is one of the most aesthetically pleasing ways to highlight furniture and décor pieces in a room. The effect of this type of décor is a modern, relaxing, and clutter-free home. In minimalist design, only the necessary wood furniture pieces are used in the design space. The famous minimalist architect Mies van der Rohe coined the term “less is more” to express the added impact that powerful pieces can have when they stand alone.
